background
Born of Herrah the Beast, Queen of Deepnest, and The Pale King, she was brought into this world due to a bargain for Herrah to become a Dreamer. Her mother raised her for a short time before her fate, but still she remembers her fondly. Raised in Deepnest, Hornet manages to avoid the infection spreading throughout the kingdom of Hallownest, spending her time wandering through the ruins and chasing off bugs who would desecrate them. This also allowed her to hone her skills to protect the seals of the Black Egg Temple where the Hollow Knight is sealed, and the Cast Off Shell.
She defends the kingdom with a resolute determination. Once such instance is when Quirrel returns Hallownest through the Howling Cliffs. She fights him, admiring his skill as he holds his own, however the mask he wears upon his head is one she recognizes. Monomon, the Teacher, bound as a Dreamer— which meant Quirrel must have been called back for some unknown reason. Thus she allows him to pass, but keeps eyes on him.
Hornet sensed the return of the infection, and wanders through Hallownest seeking answers. The future dependent on what she finds and what she can do. During her travels she encounters the Knight. A vessel from the abyss that she has no idea how they escaped. At first she tries to prevent them from traveling through the kingdom, to stop them from their journey, but she loses the first battle in Greenpath, and leaves without saying a word. Throughout the Knight's time, she discovers that they appear to be unraveling the secrets of the Dreamers, and the angry goddess that has infected the kingdom, seeking to put an end to the Radiance. She follows them, watching closely as they continue to reach their goals and learn more and more about the kingdom. In Deepnest, she watches as they break the seal that binds her mother to being a Dreamer, which meant she was no longer of this world, and sits in quiet contemplation of what this will all mean. Could it be done?
They meet once more to battle, as she too has learned a few tricks and brought her tools with her (she will not underestimate them again), and once more loses. This time, she allows them to pass to the Cast Off Shell to retrieve the King's Brand, and pursue the truth to the end. When the Knight returns to the Crossroads, to the Black Egg Temple, she is there, waiting, allowing them passage to break the seal on the Hollow Knight and put an end to this tragedy. She aids the Knight, breaking open the Hollow Knight's carapace during the battle, and waits for them to return.
The knight, unfortunately, does not return. Instead, she finds their broken shell on the floor of the temple, but the infection appears to have been stopped. The kingdom saved, though they will never know their savior.
Most recently, she has been kidnapped by veiled bugs to be brought to the far reaches of Pharloom. What they want from her, she does not know, but they sealed her in a carriage and brought her to their kingdom. She knows not what broke her seal, but she managed to escape their clutches, but is injured in the process. Now she traverses another kingdom, searching for answers, though has a hunch she was taken because of her ability to spin silk within her shell. This is the land the Weavers left, and she will learn the truth of why they did, and why she is there. She has, thus far, made it up through to Greymore after fighting the strange bug, Lace, who wishes to stop her from her quest. So she continues her journey up to the Citadel, and who knows what awaits her there.
