• Character Name: Hornet
• Character Age: Hundreds of indeterminant years
• Character Canon: Hollow Knight
• Canon Point: Post Dream No More ending
• Character History: History
• Character Personality: Provide information about their personality, both negative and positive aspects — with three of each. Give examples of how they've behaved this way. You do not need to provide an essay, but please submit enough to give a feel for the character.
— Pragmatic: She approaches life in Hallownest in a practical way, giving a lot of thought into her actions and how they affect the world around her. She has a solid grasp of how her actions can put those in danger, or how it can protect the once-proud bugs of the sprawling kingdom. She is quick to understand her place in the Knight's quest, her purpose within the grand scheme of things once the reason for the infection is uncovered. She does not bother with "what ifs", tending to take things as they are.
— Dutiful: She has perhaps brought this upon herself, but she feels as though she has a duty to protect the kingdom from those who seek to strip it of it's riches. She has, for many years, kept intruders out of Hallownest by way of the Howling Cliffs, only allowing a few to pass into the kingdom. She prides herself in being a protector, someone reliable with skills to keep those around her safe. Despite the infection, the loss of the bugs around her, she manages to keep her head about her. Her duty is to the bugs of Hallownest even if they currently see her as an enemy.
— Hopeful: While Hornet has dealt with much in her long life, hope is something she holds dear. She exhausts her options with trying to deal with the Radiance, searching high and low for an answer until the Knight comes along. While she's hostile to the Knight in the beginning for wishing to break the seal of the Black Egg Temple, as the Knight progresses she begins to think that maybe there is another way to stop the infection. While it's mostly within her own inner thoughts, it's clear that she wants to be a more positive influence in change. That her lonely existence is with purpose, rather than a means to an end.
— Pragmatic: While this is also a positive trait for her, it is also something that she could stand to be less of. Yes, she views things in a practical lens, however it is to her detriment when more emotion could be shown. She knows that her mother fell into eternal slumber to keep the Radiance from infecting Hallownest, she accepts this fact that she has been without her mother for most of her life, however, this does not mean she is happy about it. She views the loss of her mother as a necessary one, speaking highly of the sacrifice. The fact that she is alive because of Herrah is not lost on her, and she feels a debt is owed to the world around her because of it. She tells the Knight that she is pained to have stood by and watched as her mother was slain, but it comes off more of an observation of sadness, knowing the meaning behind the sacrifice and knowing what the Knight will achieve by their actions.
— Stubborn: She digs her heels in when it comes to how she protects the kingdom. While she can sit down and talk, her drive to protect the bugs of Hallownest means she's a needle first, talk second kind of girl. This is evident in how she attacks Quirrel when he is seemingly called back. She attacks him, trying to prevent him from entering the Kingdom through the Howling Cliffs, only to stop once she realizes he carries the mask of Monomon upon his head. She also does this with the Knight, twice, using her combat expertise to test the Knight's mettle, refusing to let them go further without proof they are strong enough to succeed because battle is the only way for her to truly test strength.
— Detached: While she is incredibly involved in the Knight's journey through the kingdom, she's rather detached from her emotions, coming off as cold, calculating in a world overrun by the Radiance's infection that keeps the bugs of Hallownest enthralled. She chooses her words carefully, wanting to convey her point in a certain way without too much emotion. As stated above, she is pained by her mother's passing, but her outward appearance and word choice suggest she is trying to disassociate the emotion. She remarks that the Knight might think her stern, but she is not "completely cold", meaning she feels something but consciously, or subconsciously, she does not display it. She does not act on emotion, something she and the Knight share, but unlike the Knight, she is still capable of feeling (especially if the Knight uses the Dreamnail on her. Her hope and sadness are definitely more in her thoughts than her outward displays).
